Nourish to Flourish: May 2023

Health and Wellness Go Hand in Hand

By Sandra Carr

OCPS’ Nourish to Flourish Wellness Boost encourages employees to live a healthy lifestyle by providing physical and mental health tips. For May, the UCLA RISE Center provides information on the eight dimensions of wellness.

  • Career
  • Emotional
  • Environmental
  • Existential
  • Financial
  • Intellectual
  • Physical
  • Social

The World Health Organization defines wellness as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.

A Wheel of Wellness features the eight dimensions and shows how each one can affect and influence the other in different situations. For example, if you’re excited about moving to a new town (environmental domain), then it can motivate you to make new friends (social domain).

The Nourish to Flourish Wellness Boost is an OCPS Mental Health Commission incentive that was started by School Board Chair Teresa Jacobs in 2020. The group provides services to support the mental and emotional well-being of staff and students by collaborating with community stakeholders.

Each week during the school year, OCPS employees are randomly selected to receive a $25 wellness-boost gift card. The selected staff members choose how they want to nourish to flourish by using the reward to meet their cognitive, emotional, interpersonal, professional or spiritual needs.
