SBM Byrd poses with Colin Poon
The School Board of Orange County held its regularly-scheduled board meeting at the Ronald Blocker Educational Leadership Center. These are the highlights of the meeting:

School Board recognition (seen in photo above)

School Board Member Melissa Byrd, District 7, recognized Colin Poon, an Apopka High School student. Poon made a case, via email, as to why sun-safety education should be a part of OCPS’ curriculum. His request reached the superintendent and as a result of his well-researched explanation, sun-safety education will be a part of the biology curriculum and promoted during physical education and health classes beginning in the 2023-24 school year. Well done, Colin.

Board approved the 2023-24 Board of Directors for the Foundation for OCPS

Orange County Public Schools established its Foundation in 1987. At its meeting on June 1, 2023, the Foundation Board of Directors approved their slate of members and leadership for 2023-24 as required by Florida Statute 1001.453.

Board selected and approved a representative & alternate for FSBA Advocacy committee

The Orange County School Board nominated and approved School Board Vice Chair, Angie Gallo, District 1, as the Florida School Boards Association (FSBA) Advocacy Representative and School Board member Maria Salamanca, District 2, as the Alternate for the 2023-2024 term.
