Magnet Seal of Distinction

The Arbor Ridge magnet is for students in grades sixth to eighth. Students have the opportunity to reach the highest intellectual and behavioral potential in a small, nurturing learning environment. This setting allows students to gain academic success without the pressure of a large, traditional middle school and will enable them to prepare for greater achievement beyond the eighth grade. This rigorous program emphasizes self-organization, responsibility, and leadership so that students are prepared to live as productive and successful citizens in an ever-changing, challenging society. Participating students enter the magnet in the sixth grade and a limited number may enter in seventh and eighth grades.

Transportation is provided for this program for students who reside within the Arbor Ridge Elementary transportation zone.

Specific Eligibility Requirements: Applicant's schedule must be able to accommodate magnet classes and a 2.5 GPA is recommended.

Magnet Seal of Distinction 

The Cambridge curriculum prepares students for life, helping them to develop an informed curiosity and a lasting passion for learning. The focus of the program is to provide an opportunity for middle school students to explore rigorous high school level coursework requiring knowledge, understanding, application and skills through research projects, investigation, and written response, as well as practical oral labs relying on student-supported perspectives.

The Center for the Advancement of Science and Engineering magnet provides a rigorous integrated curriculum that focuses on science, technology, engineering, and math. Students have a selection of science-based electives, combined with core curriculum that infuses STEM practices of inquiry-based thinking and project-based learning. Through Lockhart Middle School's business and educational partnerships, STEM electives introduce students to a variety of engineering fields. English language arts, social studies, and math teachers utilize STEM-based texts and focus on cross-curricular, grade-level projects. In addition, partnerships with nearby Edgewater and Wekiva High Schools allow mentorship opportunities and course progressions within their STEM-based magnet programs.

All students are part of Lockhart's award-winning STEM Club, which participates in robotic and design competitions. STEM principles are infused throughout the day so that students will have a college and career-building foundation to support their entire academic career.

The Howard Academy of Arts provides a rigorous arts and integrated academic curriculum with an array of fine arts elective courses. These courses provide enhanced opportunities for high school and college preparation. With a focus in the visual arts and performing arts, students are able to explore engaging classes that include musical theatre, acting, dance, stage design, stage production, chorus, band, jazz band, guitar, orchestra, music theory and composition, digital photography, digital video production and visual art. Academy students share their work and talent through various exhibits, performances, and competitions.

Conveniently located in the heart of downtown Orlando near Lake Eola, Howard Middle School offers a beautiful historic facility for these performances and exhibitions. Students interested in developing a deep understanding of the arts in an academically focused environment are encouraged to apply for the magnet. Participating students enter the magnet during sixth grade, with a limited number of seats available for students entering seventh and eighth grades.

Magnet Seal of Distinction
 The Orlando Gifted Academy provides opportunities for elementary gifted learners to reach their potential while pursuing interests and tapping into strengths. Students will work individually and collaboratively with fellow students while challenged to think creatively and use problem-solving strategies to develop real-world and applicable projects.

Participating students may enter the program as rising second to eighth graders using the School Choice application process and lottery.

This magnet is designed to develop oral fluency and literacy in both English and Spanish with the goal of achieving academic excellence and bilingual proficiency in both languages. English and Spanish are used to teach students not only a second language, but how to be biliterate and bi-cultural citizens of the world. Spanish is integrated into a content area class in order to ensure students reach a high level of proficiency in the target language.

The World Language Academy at Lakeview Middle School provides an instructional model for English speaking students to learn a second language and be on their way to becoming biliterate. Emphasis on Spanish or French instruction in the middle grades allows English speakers ample exposure to the target languages- Spanish or French. Becoming part of the World Language Academy enables students to acquire Spanish or French orally and as well as transfer reading and writing skills into the targeted language. Students will be immersed into either the Spanish or French language with a block (two periods) of language instruction for two of their elective classes. Students have the opportunity to earn two high school credits of foreign language prior to entering high school and will be better prepared to enroll in an Advanced Placement foreign language course. Two-way dual language is offered with a limited number of seats available.

Students will also cultivate an understanding and appreciation of other cultures and be better prepared for a global future. Participating students enter the program during sixth grade, with a limited number of seats available for students entering seventh and eighth grades.

The International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) at Roberto Clemente Middle School is designed to help students develop the knowledge, understanding, attitudes, and skills necessary to participate actively and responsibly in a changing world. The MYP is internationally recognized and encourages students to embrace and understand the connections between traditional subjects and the real world, and become critical and reflective thinkers.

Using global contexts, MYP students develop an understanding of their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet through developmentally appropriate explorations of:

  • Identities and relationships
  • Personal and cultural identity
  • Orientations in space and time
  • Scientific and technical innovations
  • Fairness and development
  • Globalization and sustainability

Participating students enter the program as sixth graders and a limited number may enter as seventh and eighth graders. Students throughout the Orange County School District may apply for this program at Roberto Clemente Middle School.
