Maintaining its focus to be the top producer of successful students in the nation, the OCPS Calculus Project strives to increase the number of students who enroll in and successfully complete AP Calculus.

The Calculus Project requires students to attend summer camp, 8 - 11:30 a.m., for four weeks. Selected students begin their journey the summer before entering seventh grade in preparation for Algebra 1 Honors. The cohort progresses to Geometry Honors before eighth grade, then Algebra 2 Honors, Advanced Topics and Pre-Calculus, before grades 9-11, respectively, and AP Calculus before the student’s senior year.

“Being in the Calculus Project excelled me a year in math. It has helped me have better math skills and allowed me to know more materials, which helped prepare me for the school year,” said Gillian “Gigi” Pratt, a rising freshman who is taking an Algebra 2 preview.

Growing the number of students who take AP Calculus increases the possibility of them exploring a career in Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM), which are traditionally underrepresented by minorities. Through initiatives like the Calculus Project, the Minority Achievement Office hopes to create a new reality.
